“Software of the Brain”

A simple way for most of us to understand what Neuro Linguistic Programming is useful for is to compare the computer to the human brain

The computer has in recent years been likened to a model the human brain. Computers as we know consist of hardware (the physical components of the computer) and software (which are the programmes that are used to work with data). In the same way if our brains are a kind of computer, then our thoughts and actions are like software programmes.

 When your current model of computer gets too slow, or too outdated, one way to easily fix the problem is by upgrading the software programmes. In the same way, if you can change your mental programmes (thoughts and actions) just as you change or upgrade your computer software, you’d immediately get positive changes in your performances. The improvements would be in the way you feel, think, act and live.

The metaphor of the computer also explains why change is for some of us so difficult. No matter how much you wish, want and hope, it won’t magically up grade the software in the computer. Neither will getting angry or entering in the same old commands over and over. The only way to upgrade the computer is to add new instructions to the current programmes. No one thinks that the shape or date of manufacture of a computer automatically limits its performance to certain programmes. The limitations are primarily in the software, not the hardware.

With your computer the way to install the upgrades is clearly laid out in the manual with the software. With humans beings this is far more challenging. To quote a well known NLP trainer  “Human beings are the only super computers that can be produced, or rather reproduced, with unskilled labour…And they don’t come with any  instruction manual”. That is until Now.
